Learning Alliance Awards Partners at the NATE UNITE 2022 Conference

Learning Alliance announces their attendance at the NATE UNITE 2022 Conference and the award presentation to some of their employer partners.  

Tampa, Florida —February 21, 2022 — On the week of February 21st, Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC) attended this year’s NATE UNITE 2022 Conference in Las Vegas, NV. NATE UNITE is widely regarded as the premier telecommunications conference and trade show in the diverse wireless, broadcast, and communications infrastructure arenas. The anticipated event helps Learning Alliance catch up with many of our respected employer partners and engage with potential new partners. Keynote speakers include FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr and DISH Co-Founder and Chairman Charlie Ergen. 

During the show, Learning Alliance awarded three of our industry partners for their contributions to the telecom industry. Awards went to the following organizations:  

  • Rebecca Cardarelli from Velex for Hiring Partner of the Year 
  • Beau Aero from GME for Industry Safety of the Year 
  • Todd from NATE for Industry Association of the year 

Velex, a tower construction and technical services company, and LAC’s partnership began in 2020. Learning Alliance recognized Rebecca Cardarelli, Director of Talent Acquisition, for helping with the successful placement of 15 LAC graduates in 2021. Velex, founded in 2013, is a tower construction and technical services company dedicated to efficiently deploying 5G networks while exceeding industry quality and safety standards. The company is headquartered in Frisco, TX and currently operates nationwide. 

GME Supply, North America’s premier outfitter of fall protection, safety equipment, industrial gear, and tools, is a long-time partner with LAC. Learning Alliance acknowledged GME Supply for their unparalleled help in the safety and outfitting of our students. 

LAC continues to be one of NATE’s strongest advocates. This extends to the Military of NATE Committee, which helps provide employment opportunities to veterans. Learning Alliance works alongside this initiative, helping people achieve their full potential by supporting their success in the communications infrastructure industry.

Learning Alliance and T-Mobile Celebrate the First Year of the NextTech Diversity Program

Tampa, Florida — February 1, 2022 — Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC), in partnership with T-Mobile, today shared highlights from the first year of the NextTech Diversity Program. Launched in 2021, the NextTech Diversity Program provides career training and placement for hundreds of diverse candidates to take on meaningful employment within the telecommunications industry.

The goal of the NextTech Diversity Program is to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion across the telecom industry by investing in the recruitment, training, certification and job placement of minorities and women. Today, people of color comprise a disproportionately small percentage of all network technicians and field crews, meanwhile the 5G revolution is expected to create an estimated 20,000 new jobs to help build the network infrastructure. The NextTech Diversity Program creates a productive bridge between both of these realities: an industry that requires thousands of new workers and a workforce that must be made more diverse.

“The program is like a month-long boot camp where students will be at our facilities 12 hours per day, six days a week for an entire month. The students won’t just graduate as tower technicians; they will be certified 5G technicians, supporting the industry. It gives graduates the opportunity to choose the path that aligns best with their personal mission,” said Cesar Ruiz, CEO of LAC.

NextTech launched one year ago with nearly $1 million in funding, including an initial $750,000 in seed funding from T-Mobile and an additional $225,000 from another telecommunications partner. This support allowed Learning Alliance to oversee the recruitment, training, certification, and job placement of 50 LAC graduates to 32 different network-building companies in 2021. LAC’s projected 2022 funding will help the organization recruit, train, certify, and place twice as many graduates in its second year.

“NextTech gave me the opportunity to be a part of the telecommunication industry and to get the training and skills I needed to be efficient. On top of that, I’m looking forward to earning more money and having a better quality of life, “said Darius Walker, a former NextTech graduate.

In recognition of Black History Month and the first anniversary of the program, today T-Mobile unveiled expanded professional development programs and curriculum.

“The success we’ve seen in the first year of the NextTech Diversity Program is a testament to T-Mobile’s commitment to empower the communities we serve,” said Joyce Christanio, Senior Program Manager for Supplier Diversity at T-Mobile. “As we continue our work to establish more diverse talent pipelines, we’re asking our industry peers and allies to join us by either funding training for candidates or hiring NextTech Program graduates.”

The NextTech Diversity Program includes partners that represent a wide range of telecom companies, and their collaboration demonstrates a growing industry-wide commitment to bring diverse talent to this space. In addition to the program’s founding partners, LAC is proud to announce six additional organizations joining the initiative in 2022:

LAC Awarded Two Florida DoE Grants to Support Apprenticeship Program Growth and Expansion

Tampa, Florida — July 27, 2021 — Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC) was awarded two mini grants designed to support apprenticeship program growth and expansion by the Florida Department of Education. The Florida Department of Education announced nearly $600,000 in funding has been awarded to Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) in Florida through a partnership with the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education and CareerSource Florida. 

This first grant award will be used for program development throughout the telecommunications, information technology, manufacturing, and renewable energy industries. Learning Alliance customizes curriculum and provides electronic on the job competency completion tracking for each participating employer based on their needs. The curriculum and training are aligned with industry standards and certifications necessary to meet demands of the evolving workforce. Learning Alliance will further utilize the funds in a partnership with nonprofit Workforce Evolved, to increase outreach for underrepresented populations in order to give them access to high-skill high wage occupations, which in turn benefits communities as a whole.  

The second grant award will be utilized to support apprentices employed with TriOrb Solutions, an information technology and electronic security company based out of St Petersburg, Florida. The funds will be providing apprentices laptops, tools, and safety equipment for daily use.  

The apprenticeship programs are run through the Learning Alliance School of Continuing Education, (LASCE). LASCE provides customized training and workforce development solutions for employers nationwide. Learning Alliance Corporation also runs pre apprenticeship programs in telecommunications that help build the talent pipeline by providing skilled workers with industry certifications and training to transition directly into an apprenticeship program or new career.  

“As a Registered Apprenticeship Program sponsor, we alleviate the cost and administrative burden from employers. We have many excited participants eager to start our new apprenticeship programs, which we are expanding rapidly at both the state and national levels. This funding will allow us to formalize training and improve retention with our employer partners while empowering the apprentices and mentors involved in the programs.”  Amy Lesniak, Director of Continuing Education of LASCE

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr Visits Learning Alliance Corporation

Tampa, Florida — July 26, 2021 —Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC)an organization building stronger workforce development for trades, hosted Commissioner Brendan Carr of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 14, 2021. Carr toured LAC’s campus in Tampa, climbed LAC’s 150-foot training tower with students, and provided insight on telecom workforce development opportunities to local executives and workforce board members. 

“We wanted to bring awareness to our local community about the opportunities this industry provides our students,” said Fred Arnold, LAC Director of Operations. “5G is a gateway to new jobs, and our students are on the front lines of that technology.” 

Carr addressed the demand for qualified workers to build out the necessary infrastructure. During his tower climb, Carr experienced a job hazard analysis, safety briefing, and certification check. Derrick Francis, LAC Director of Training remarked, “It was refreshing to see how much commissioner Carr cared about what we are doing here at our school, for our students and the industry as a whole.”   

Cesar Ruiz, CEO of Learning Alliance explained LAC’s “crawl, walk, run methodology.” Before students can get out in the field, “they need the certifications, the hands-on training and the opportunity to simulate the tasks they’ll need to complete while 200 feet in the air.”. 

LAC provided training station tours to all in attendance. The group saw areas dedicated to initiatives including rooftop deployment, weatherproofing, structured cabling from outside plants, and fiber splicing.  

Commissioner Carr spoke to students about the increased capacity within 5G systems that will lead to new innovations, “There’s not a lot of people that know we have a 20,000 job void and we can fill people almost immediately and we need to make sure there’s the support structure, that there are loan programs, apprenticeship programs. We’re just talking, there’s a lot of decisions going on right now in the state and back in Washington about infrastructure bills. We need to make sure that we include in that, pathways for people to get into these types of programs right here. So, I’m really proud of the work that teachers are doing here and of the LAC organization.” 

LAC highlighted emerging training technology, demonstrating augmented reality use cases and LAC’s training video game. Arnold explains, “By combining our virtual reality gaming components and Taqtile’s Manifest software, we have produced a unique way to train and develop our students.”   

“Many of the uses and applications of 5G are unknown to us, but virtual and augmented reality will be a large part of its growth,” added the Commissioner. 

The day wrapped up with discussions regarding LAC’s partnership with T-Mobile and the NextTech Diversity Program – an initiative to help lead underrepresented candidates into the industry.

NextTech Diversity Program
Black professionals make up just 10% of the telecom industry’s network infrastructure field. With $750,000 in initial seed funding from T-Mobile and another $150,000 committed from other telecommunications partners, over the next five years, the NextTech Diversity Program aims to provide career training and placement for thousands of diverse candidates to take on roles as 5G network technicians. Telecom trade school Learning Alliance Corporation will oversee recruitment, training, certification, and job placement of candidates as they create long-term careers in roles such as tower climber, 5G small cell and field tech.

LAC Partners with Taqtile to Build and Deliver Augmented Reality-based Training Simulation to LAC Students

Tampa, Florida — July 21, 2021 —Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC) partners with Taqtile to build and deliver augmented reality-based training simulation to LAC students.

“We are building training and development in the virtual space because it offers a safe environment for students to practice continuous repetition of hard skills,” said Fred Arnold, Director of Operations for LAC.

Taqtile’s Manifest platform leverages augmented reality (AR) to provide state-of-the-art training and upskilling support to front-line workers and technicians. With Manifest, organizations such as the Learning Alliance Corporation can leverage AR to access the expertise of knowledgeable staff and trainers, providing step-by-step maintenance procedures and repair instructions, empowering technicians to complete their jobs more efficiently and accurately.

“By combining our virtual reality gaming components and Taqtile’s Manifest software, we have produced a unique way to train and develop our students,” said Fred.

LAC presented the augmented reality gear during a site visit from FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, industry executives, and workforce development boards.

“Many of the uses and applications of 5G are unknown to us, but virtual and augmented reality will be a large part of its growth,” said Brendan.

Learning Alliance plans to integrate virtual and augmented reality solutions into its training in a number of areas including wireless, fiber, and broadband.

“We will continue to provide a flexible learning environment for our students and partner employers,” said Cesar Ruiz, CEO of Learning Alliance. “Augmented reality provides a unique way to teach that empowers the user through a hands-free experience,” he said.

“Deskless, hands-on workers are the most technologically underserved population in business today. At Taqtile, we aim to empower deskless workers with the tools they need to learn and execute just about any complex task in a hands-free manner,” said Taqtile senior director of sales, Joe Clukey. “With Manifest’s ability to break down any complex task into easy-to-digest, bite-sized pieces, we’re taking students from the classroom to the field more quickly, and enabling them to learn through doing instead of through just watching or reading.”

The technology utilizes Microsoft Hololens built on a Trimble hard hat that allows the student to be protected in construction environments, all the while being taught new installation techniques. The compact nature of Halolens provides an unobstructed view the environment around while displaying critical information to the user.

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr to Visit Learning Alliance Corporation

Tampa, Florida — July 13, 2021 — Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC) will be hosting Commissioner Brendan Carr of the Federal Communications Commission on July 14, 2021. During his visit, Commissioner Carr will climb a cell tower with LAC students. He will then be heading to the LAC campus in Tampa to tour the facilities and address the LAC students and local business leaders. While on campus, Commissioner Carr will be introduced to several new and ongoing LAC projects and will observe the student’s hands-on training. 

LAC will be showcasing its augmented reality and videogame projects. Commissioner Carr will be able to see how emerging technologies allow for increased safety while providing virtual hands-on training. With Microsoft HoloLens, future students will be able to interact virtually with much of the same equipment they will eventually use in their future telecommunications careers, according to LAC.  

Learning Alliance CEO and Owner Cesar Ruiz will also address those in attendance. He intends to cover telecom workforce development, industry educational needs, and LAC’s involvement in the NextTech Diversity Program.  

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr has worked to modernize 5G infrastructure and speed up the development of high-speed networks, prioritizing the expansion of America’s skilled workforce specific to tower climbers and construction crews – both of which are needed to build out next-gen networks. Commissioner Carr has shown his appreciation through a series of “5G Ready” Hard Hat presentations to workers across the country.

Learning Alliance Corporation Finalizes Transition to In-Person Training Model

Tampa, Florida — July 1, 2021 — Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC) announced it has finalized its conversion to full in-person training for its Broadband Digital Installer program. Over the last year and a half, LAC had to alter its delivery model in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, the structure was based around an eight-week plan which consisted of seven weeks of online training and one week of live in-person, hands-on training. With Florida now lifting its COVID-19 restrictions, LAC decided to reinvent its training program once again to continue to give students the best possible learning experience

Cesar Ruiz, CEO/Owner of LAC described the change, “We’re changing our entire delivery model, from a blended, six-week learning environment, with four weeks online and two weeks at LAC, to a month-long bootcamp where students will be at our facilities 12 hours per day, six days a week for an entire month. The students won’t just graduate as tower technicians, they will be certified 5G technicians, supporting the entire industry. It will give graduates the opportunity to choose the path that aligns best with their personal mission.

”The telecommunications industry is a quickly developing and evolving space, and LAC continues to adapt with it – showing a willingness to pivot as needed to embrace the industry’s needs. One of the individuals that played a major role in the developments of LAC’s new delivery model is LAC’s Director of Training, Derrick Francis. The following is what Derrick had to say about the shift:

“Our new program will be a comprehensive four-week program covering almost everything a person working in the telecommunication field might encounter. Students will spend two weeks on macro sites learning how to safely perform work at height and conduct rescues. They will also learn how to perform maintenance, installation, and decommissioning of cellular and radio tower components. In week three, students will focus on the basics of design and installation of a cabling system that will support multiple systems and various hardware applications for telecom in both the residential and industrial sectors. In the final week, students will learn the fundamentals of how fiber optic systems work. Students will be taught how to set-up, test and maintain fiber optic cables in various settings and environments.

”LAC’s newly redesigned Broadband Digital Installer is specifically designed to get students the hands-on training and certifications they need to get started with a new career in the telecom industry. The multifaceted four-week program prepares the learner for several different job roles such as Tower Technician, Fiber Optic Technician, Structured Cabling Installer, and Telecommunications Technician, according to LAC.

LAC says this new program structure will “empower LAC students to start their future careers in the telecommunications industry as quickly as possible and give them the safety-focused skills they need to be successful in the telecom workplace.”
