For Immediate Release 7/24/23 – Learning Alliance Newsroom

Key Strategies to Find Your Ideal Employer in the Telecommunications Sector

Importance of Finding the Right Telecommunications Employer

Navigating through the rapidly changing telecommunications industry, it becomes clear that securing the right employer is key to achieving career advancement and job satisfaction. As new opportunities continuously emerge, it’s vital to identify organizations that not only offer a stable work environment but also promote professional growth and innovation. In this blog post, we’ll delve into proven strategies that aid in discovering the perfect telecommunications sector employer.

Investigating Telecommunication Company Reputations

Initially, it’s crucial to begin your search by thoroughly examining prospective employers’ standing within the telecommunications industry. Consider companies that boast a solid track record, consistently receive great reviews, and demonstrate a clear history of growth and innovation. Tools like industry forums, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor can provide valuable insights into a company’s reputation, work culture, and employee experiences.

Staying Ahead with Technological Innovations

Moving forward, it becomes increasingly apparent how crucial it is to stay competitive in technology within the telecommunications industry. Therefore, make it a point to focus on employers that are actively investing in state-of-the-art technologies, showcasing their dedication to innovation. Take a close look at their ongoing projects, patents, and partnerships to determine their future readiness.

Evaluating Employee Growth Opportunities

Next, we cannot overlook the importance of continual learning and professional development in ensuring a successful career in telecommunications. Prioritize employers offering solid training and development programs. Examine whether they provide certifications, workshops, mentoring, or educational reimbursements, and take the time to understand their promotion policies to gauge opportunities for career advancement.

Prioritizing Diversity and Inclusion

Moreover, diversity and inclusion play an integral role in a successful workplace. In your search, look for employers that are dedicated to fostering a culture of respect and acceptance. Carefully assess their commitment to gender and ethnic diversity, and representation across all organizational levels. A diverse workforce invariably promotes creativity and innovation.

Leveraging Networking Opportunities

Furthermore, remember that networking is a powerful tool, especially in the telecommunications industry. Engage with industry associations, participate in conferences and seminars, and make connections through online communities, such as LinkedIn groups or forums. This approach aids in gaining insights, making connections, and learning about potential employers held in high regard within the industry.

Utilizing Telecommunications Job Platforms

Last but not least, make sure to leverage online job platforms like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Indeed. These platforms offer a wealth of information, providing detailed job listings, company reviews, and salary data. Customize your searches to match your qualifications, location preferences, and career goals. Stay up-to-date with potential employers by following them on social media and keeping an eye on their latest news and openings.

Achieving Success in the Telecommunications Sector

In conclusion, locating the ideal employer in the telecommunications industry involves a blend of thorough research, networking, and careful evaluation. By considering a company’s reputation, technological innovation, employee growth programs, diversity commitments, and industry engagement, you can certainly improve your chances of securing a role with a progressive and reputable employer. Given the expansive and dynamic nature of the telecommunications industry, it is vital to keep an open mind, stay informed, and be proactive to empower your career.

Learning Alliance and T-Mobile Celebrate the First Year of the NextTech Diversity Program

Tampa, Florida — February 1, 2022 — Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC), in partnership with T-Mobile, today shared highlights from the first year of the NextTech Diversity Program. Launched in 2021, the NextTech Diversity Program provides career training and placement for hundreds of diverse candidates to take on meaningful employment within the telecommunications industry.

The goal of the NextTech Diversity Program is to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion across the telecom industry by investing in the recruitment, training, certification and job placement of minorities and women. Today, people of color comprise a disproportionately small percentage of all network technicians and field crews, meanwhile the 5G revolution is expected to create an estimated 20,000 new jobs to help build the network infrastructure. The NextTech Diversity Program creates a productive bridge between both of these realities: an industry that requires thousands of new workers and a workforce that must be made more diverse.

“The program is like a month-long boot camp where students will be at our facilities 12 hours per day, six days a week for an entire month. The students won’t just graduate as tower technicians; they will be certified 5G technicians, supporting the industry. It gives graduates the opportunity to choose the path that aligns best with their personal mission,” said Cesar Ruiz, CEO of LAC.

NextTech launched one year ago with nearly $1 million in funding, including an initial $750,000 in seed funding from T-Mobile and an additional $225,000 from another telecommunications partner. This support allowed Learning Alliance to oversee the recruitment, training, certification, and job placement of 50 LAC graduates to 32 different network-building companies in 2021. LAC’s projected 2022 funding will help the organization recruit, train, certify, and place twice as many graduates in its second year.

“NextTech gave me the opportunity to be a part of the telecommunication industry and to get the training and skills I needed to be efficient. On top of that, I’m looking forward to earning more money and having a better quality of life, “said Darius Walker, a former NextTech graduate.

In recognition of Black History Month and the first anniversary of the program, today T-Mobile unveiled expanded professional development programs and curriculum.

“The success we’ve seen in the first year of the NextTech Diversity Program is a testament to T-Mobile’s commitment to empower the communities we serve,” said Joyce Christanio, Senior Program Manager for Supplier Diversity at T-Mobile. “As we continue our work to establish more diverse talent pipelines, we’re asking our industry peers and allies to join us by either funding training for candidates or hiring NextTech Program graduates.”

The NextTech Diversity Program includes partners that represent a wide range of telecom companies, and their collaboration demonstrates a growing industry-wide commitment to bring diverse talent to this space. In addition to the program’s founding partners, LAC is proud to announce six additional organizations joining the initiative in 2022:

  • Vikor – With over 30 years in the industry, they are the leading wireless infrastructure provider. Their dedication to the industry is like no other.
  • Goodman Telecom – Leaders in Wireless network deployment and cell site Maintenance Solutions with over 130,000 Projects completed.
  • Tower Systems – It is a leading Telecom Organization setting standards in safety and quality while providing skilled expertise in an evolving industry.
  • New-Tech Construction – Telecom Construction, RF-Engineering, and wireless network services are just some of what the New-Tech team can do for their clients. With over 25 years of experience, their dedication to the wireless industry is unmeasurable.
  • Petzl – Leaders in Professional Equipment from fall arrest, work positioning and personal escape. Petzl safety equipment is like no others; they set the standard.

LAC aims to continue working with T-Mobile’s NextTech Diversity Program through 2025, helping to create opportunities for minorities working to develop skills that support fulfilling careers in tech.

What is CBRS?

Tampa, Florida — September 14, 2021 — As the telecom industry grows and matures, Learning Alliance Corporation must update its training programs to include these new developments. One of these new updates is an increased focus on CBRS and the CPI certification, but what is CBRS? Citizens Broadband Radio Service or CBRS is the 150 MHz of spectrum in the 3550 MHz to 3700 MHz range (3.5 GHz to 3.7 GHz). When the FCC acknowledged CBRS’s potential, they began efforts to open the technology for unlicensed use.

In order to meet the FCC Part 96 rules , technicians who work with CBRS technologies must be trained and certified. This certification is called the Certified Professional Installer or CPI. The CPI certification provides an industry baseline for the implementation of CBRS. This exhaustive course covers a wide range of topics including: CBRS terminology and concepts, the responsibilities of a CPI, CBRS installation, the Spectrum Access System (SAS), and CBRS troubleshooting.

According to NORWEST, CBRS brings new opportunities such as “network-scheduled client access, interference-resistant qualities, uninterrupted roaming, and more than 5 to 10 times greater coverage indoors and out with always-on data encryption and remarkable power management.”

Because it can be used in an unlicensed fashion, CBRS now gives organizations the ability to both own and operate their own private LTE/5G mobile networks without carrier contracts.

There are currently thousands of telecom job openings in the US and 5G expansion is expected to create 300,000 manufacturing jobsin the U.S. and up to 22 million jobs globally by 2035.  With CBRS allowing individuals to operate private LTE/5G mobile networks, one can assume that it has the potential for rapid growth.

LAC’s Director of Training, Derrick Francis said, “I believe CBRS will create many new job opportunities for our students as they will be receiving cutting edge training and certifications to improve the quality of broadband access across many different residential and commercial applications.”.

Learning Alliance Corporation and Federated Wireless recently announced a partnership through which the two companies will work to issue more than 2,000 CPI certificates over the next two years. This partnership will greatly expand the number of technicians available nationally. The program is designed to accelerate expansion of this low-cost option to deliver high speed broadband in rural and underserved communities who might otherwise have limited access to the Internet. To learn more about LAC’s and Federated Wireless’s partnership, click here.

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr Visits Learning Alliance Corporation

Tampa, Florida — July 26, 2021 —Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC)an organization building stronger workforce development for trades, hosted Commissioner Brendan Carr of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 14, 2021. Carr toured LAC’s campus in Tampa, climbed LAC’s 150-foot training tower with students, and provided insight on telecom workforce development opportunities to local executives and workforce board members.

“We wanted to bring awareness to our local community about the opportunities this industry provides our students,” said Fred Arnold, LAC Director of Operations. “5G is a gateway to new jobs, and our students are on the front lines of that technology.”

Carr addressed the demand for qualified workers to build out the necessary infrastructure. During his tower climb, Carr experienced a job hazard analysis, safety briefing, and certification check. Derrick Francis, LAC Director of Training remarked, “It was refreshing to see how much commissioner Carr cared about what we are doing here at our school, for our students and the industry as a whole.”

Cesar Ruiz, CEO of Learning Alliance explained LAC’s “crawl, walk, run methodology.” Before students can get out in the field, “they need the certifications, the hands-on training and the opportunity to simulate the tasks they’ll need to complete while 200 feet in the air.”.

LAC provided training station tours to all in attendance. The group saw areas dedicated to initiatives including rooftop deployment, weatherproofing, structured cabling from outside plants, and fiber splicing.

Commissioner Carr spoke to students about the increased capacity within 5G systems that will lead to new innovations, “There’s not a lot of people that know we have a 20,000 job void and we can fill people almost immediately and we need to make sure there’s the support structure, that there are loan programs, apprenticeship programs. We’re just talking, there’s a lot of decisions going on right now in the state and back in Washington about infrastructure bills. We need to make sure that we include in that, pathways for people to get into these types of programs right here. So, I’m really proud of the work that teachers are doing here and of the LAC organization.”

LAC highlighted emerging training technology, demonstrating augmented reality use cases and LAC’s training video game. Arnold explains, “By combining our virtual reality gaming components and Taqtile’s Manifest software, we have produced a unique way to train and develop our students.”

“Many of the uses and applications of 5G are unknown to us, but virtual and augmented reality will be a large part of its growth,” added the Commissioner.

The day wrapped up with discussions regarding LAC’s partnership with T-Mobile and the NextTech Diversity Program – an initiative to help lead underrepresented candidates into the industry.

LAC Partners with Taqtile to Build and Deliver Augmented Reality-based Training Simulation to LAC Students

Tampa, Florida — July 21, 2021 —Learning Alliance Corporation (LAC) partners with Taqtile to build and deliver augmented reality-based training simulation to LAC students.

“We are building training and development in the virtual space because it offers a safe environment for students to practice continuous repetition of hard skills,” said Fred Arnold, Director of Operations for LAC.

Taqtile’s Manifest platform leverages augmented reality (AR) to provide state-of-the-art training and upskilling support to front-line workers and technicians. With Manifest, organizations such as the Learning Alliance Corporation can leverage AR to access the expertise of knowledgeable staff and trainers, providing step-by-step maintenance procedures and repair instructions, empowering technicians to complete their jobs more efficiently and accurately.

“By combining our virtual reality gaming components and Taqtile’s Manifest software, we have produced a unique way to train and develop our students,” said Fred.

LAC presented the augmented reality gear during a site visit from FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, industry executives, and workforce development boards.

“Many of the uses and applications of 5G are unknown to us, but virtual and augmented reality will be a large part of its growth,” said Brendan.

Learning Alliance plans to integrate virtual and augmented reality solutions into its training in a number of areas including wireless, fiber, and broadband.

“We will continue to provide a flexible learning environment for our students and partner employers,” said Cesar Ruiz, CEO of Learning Alliance. “Augmented reality provides a unique way to teach that empowers the user through a hands-free experience,” he said.

“Deskless, hands-on workers are the most technologically underserved population in business today. At Taqtile, we aim to empower deskless workers with the tools they need to learn and execute just about any complex task in a hands-free manner,” said Taqtile senior director of sales, Joe Clukey. “With Manifest’s ability to break down any complex task into easy-to-digest, bite-sized pieces, we’re taking students from the classroom to the field more quickly, and enabling them to learn through doing instead of through just watching or reading.”

The technology utilizes Microsoft Hololens built on a Trimble hard hat that allows the student to be protected in construction environments, all the while being taught new installation techniques. The compact nature of Halolens provides an unobstructed view the environment around while displaying critical information to the user.

“Learning Alliance Corporation is a leader in their space and Manifest is going to help them more efficiently train the next generation of network technicians,” said Taqtile cofounder and CEO, Dirck Schou. “With the intuitive Manifest platform, incoming students will receive the training and instruction necessary to more safely, efficiently, and accurately complete complex tasks in the field.”

About Taqtile
Taqtile, winner of the 2020 Microsoft Partner of the Year Award in the Mixed Reality category, builds enterprise software that leverages augmented reality to make Everyone an Expert, capturing the unique knowledge of company experts and sharing that knowledge with frontline workers. By virtually transporting the knowledge of experts when and where it’s needed, sometimes under the most urgent circumstances, Taqtile customers enhance operational capabilities and improve performance. The Manifest platform allows company experts to easily document and record tribal knowledge, and distribute it across an entire workforce, enabling less experienced operators to easily follow instructions and complete complex tasks safely and consistently. Training Needs of the Telecom Industry

The telecommunications industry is growing at a rapid rate. With the development of 5g and other technological advancements, workers are needed now more than ever. For those looking to fill these much-needed spots, what goes into the training to become part of the telecommunications industry? This can depend on where one would get certified, as well as what one wants to be specifically certified in.

When pursuing a career in the telecommunications industry, there are many certifications that one must acquire to be able to go out into the field, all of which can be obtained at LAC.

  • Safety Training and Certification
  • Industry Knowledge Fundamentals
  • Technical Skills through Hands on Competency Training
  • Operation of Machines, Equipment, Tools and Software
  • Operation of Motor Vehicles and Equipment

Students will learn the base knowledge areas specific to Wireless, Small Cell and Civil work including:

OSHA 10

The 10-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training Program is designed to teach an entry-level construction worker about workplace safety specifically for the construction industry. While taking this course, students can expect to learn about Hazard Recognition, Avoidance, Abatement, Prevention, as well as learning about safety and health hazards in the workplace.

American Red Cross First Aid/AED/CPR/Bloodborne pathogens

Knowing how to properly be able to handle a medical emergency is a crucial part of being a technician. Understanding how to correctly give CPR, assist an individual who is choking, and bleeding control are just some of the things one can expect to encounter within this course.

Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Training is an OSHA mandated training program for any person who may be reasonably anticipated to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials as the result of performing their job duties.

Safety LMS Authorized Climber and Rescuer

This course was designed for workers who have just entered the industry. While taking this course, one can expect to learn the fundamentals of how to properly scale a structure and assist those who are in need of rescuing.

The foundation of this course is based on the NATE CTS/CTP outline and the ANSI Z359.2-2007 standard “Minimum Requirements for a Comprehensive Managed Fall Protection Program.” The course also takes into account new equipment and standards.

Safety LMS Capstan Hoist Operations

The Safety LMS Capstan Hoists Operations course is intended to give each student the basic understanding to make good decisions while operating the Capstan Hoist. This course combined with practical experience will help prevent accidents and create better operators.

Safety LMS Fundamentals of RF/EME Radiation

Geared towards employees who work in close proximity to RF on a day-to-day basis, this course has the intent to give students a basic understanding of this difficult topic, so they will recognize the hazards and make good decisions when exposure exists. After completing the online course, they will be able to work safely, avoiding harm to themselves and the rest of their crew.

Safety LMS Crane spotter and Signal Person

The Safety LMS Crane Spotter/Signal Person course is intended to cover the responsibilities of a Crane Signal Person and a Crane Spotter Person. The student will be exposed to how a crane physically responds to each signal and some of the hazards that exist while a crane is in use.

NCTI Installer

Broadband professionals will be instructed on what is involved in certifying the reliability of the drop for digital TV, high-speed Internet and telephone service, as well as step-by-step installation procedures for each service.

Because the DOCSIS and PacketCable technologies are unique to the broadband cable industry, the course provides extensive information about their origination and the advantages that each offers.

Due to the rapid growth of and interest in home security and home automation within the broadband industry, this course covers the protocols that power the connected home as well as the connected home ecosystem.

Certified Fiber Optic Technician “CFOT®”

Fiber Optic Splicing Technicians master the equipment, tools, and technology necessary to splice fine loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cable that is used in the construction of fiber to home, business, and commercial sites. As an apprentice, your goal will be to jump in and learn the trade inside and out, becoming a Master Fiber Optic Splicing Technician.

So, what exactly does the training schedule look like on a daily basis for an LAC student? For those becoming a Broadband Digital Installer, this is an example of what one can expect when getting hands-on training on campus. The program is taught as a combination of lectures and hands on Monday to Saturday 07:00-22:00 for four weeks. The course is broken down into three main topics:  Telecom, Structured Wiring (Cabling), and Fiber.

During the Telecom section students will learn how to safely perform work at height and conduct rescues. They will also learn how to preform maintenance, installation, and decommissioning of cellular and radio tower components.

In Structured Wiring (Cabling), students will learn the basics in the design and installation of a cabling system that will support multiple systems and various hardware applications for telecom in both the residential and industrial sectors.

In the Fiber portion of the program, students will learn the fundamentals of how fiber optic systems work. Students will be taught how to set up test and maintain fiber optic cables in various setting and environment.

Clearly considering the complexity of the telecom industry, this is not a fully comprehensive list of required classes for every US job site, but for the student looking to get into the industry it’s a great start. That said, with such a rapidly growing industry the time is now to become a certified technician. Getting the proper certifications and know-how to work properly, safely, and efficiently is essential to starting a proper career as a technician. As the number of training options and opportunities continues to grow, it has never been easier to get trained, get certified, and get started!
